Illustrated Lecture by Zoe Beloff

"The Somnambulists" Exhibition Debut

Saturday, April 16, 2011 - 8:00pm

The Velaslavasay Panorama welcomes artist Zoe Beloff, here in person Saturday, April 16 to talk about her recent work and to celebrate the opening of her exhibition “The Somnambulists,” an installation that will be on view in our Ancillary Salon through May 29, 2011.

Beloff will discuss the history behind "The Somnambulists" and her recent work on the archive of the Coney Island Amateur Psychoanalytic Society, which was active from 1926-1972. This elusive society, often thought to be an urban myth, was made up of working people who wished to participate in one of the great intellectual movements of the 20th century. Beloff will present materials pertaining to the Society's many activities, including their series of Sunday lectures and plans to rebuild the Dreamland Amusement Park according to Freud’s ideas of dream formation. Beloff will also screen a number of the Society's Dream Films, in which members recreated their dreams on film, exhibiting an unapologetic and playful exploration of their inner lives.

As companion to the exhibition and illustrated lecture, three books by Zoe Beloff will be available for sale at The Velaslavasay Panorama.
