In February 2014, two cultural representatives from Los Angeles participated in arts residencies at the Bali Purnati Center for the Arts as part of the Cultural Exchange International program of the Department of Cultural Affairs. Join Ellen C. Caldwell and Sara Velas for a visual tour of their experiences in Indonesia and an afternoon visit in the gardens of The Velaslavasay Panorama.

On Saturday, Ellen C. Caldwell will speak about her experiences interviewing artists throughout the island of Bali, including Ketut Teja Astawa, above. Astawa's acrylic paintings are comical, alluring, and aesthetically pleasing. He reinvents and personalizes traditional Balinese painting style, iconography, and conventions by infusing them with his complex humor and narrative.

Sara Velas will present information on investigations into various storytelling traditions on Java & Bali. On display will be a scroll painting sketch she made while in residence -  Jalan-Jalan Through Batuan - which depicts the village area surrounding the Bali Purnati Center for the Arts.
