This evening presents an illustrated lecture by Robert Millis about the history of 78rpm records in India.  Millis spent a year in India photographing record collections, interviewing collectors, and visiting archives and record markets. This presentation will feature several short Sublime Frequencies films, rare music from 78rpm discs and glimpses of Calcutta. Millis is a founding member of Climax Golden Twins, a Fulbright Scholar, a solo artist, frequent contributor to the Sublime Frequencies label and the creator of Victrola Favorites: Artifacts From Bygone Days, as well as the films This World is Unreal Like a Snake in a Rope and Phi Ta Khon: Ghosts of Isan. Mr. Millis has gathered his research and documentation into a recent publication Indian Talking Machine, a 244-page full-color hardcover book with two CDs containing 46 tracks from shellac discs spanning 1903 to 1949, which will be available for purchase at the event.

The presentation is brought to you in part by the Los Angeles County Arts Commission and the Velaslavasay Panorama Enthusiasts Society.
