Sara Velas, Founder of the Velaslavasay Panorama and President of the International Panorama Council, presents a lecture on the panorama phenomenon in China, which began in the 1980s and flourishes today. This lecture is an overview of 20th & 21st-century panoramas in Asia with a focus on the panoramas of China, including the Guiness Book of World Record's Largest Painting in the World: The Splendid Central Plains, in Zhengzhou, Henan Province. Many of these massive paintings have been created under the organization and initiative of the master artists at the Luxun Academy of Fine Arts in Shenyang (Liaoning Province) - all highly trained oil painters - and the vast majority of these panoramas depict battles from either the Chinese Revolution or the struggle against the Japanese occupation, as these two periods of the 20th century have inextricably shaped the country in monumental ways.

A post-lecture reception will be held in the gardens of the Velaslavasay Panorama along with delicacies and ambient classical Chinese music performed by Sushien Chang.

The Panorama welcomes back experimental artist, designer and musician Lun*na Menoh for her premiere performance of Maurice Ravel's Bolero, reimagined using sampled sewing machine noise and found sound. Opening the show are Les Sewing Sisters, an artist collective using the sewing machine and voices to create music surrounding matters of dress, fabric and fashion.
