PANORAMIC ELOPEMENT OFFERING PRESENTED BY SHORT + SWEET
Short + Sweet presents their fourth Pop-Up Elopement wedding experience, this time in the gardens of the Velaslavasay Panorama. For couples who want to get married (or renew their vows) one month from today, the talented team of Short + Sweet offers a limited number of enchanting garden elopement opportunities on May 22, 2021.
Their Elopement Pop-Up Package includes capacity for the couple and up to four guests, photography coverage by Alissa Noelle Photography, ceremonial florals by Going SteadyStudios, a mini celebration cake by Just What I Kneaded LA, commemorative glasses from Table Method, and a marriage certificate designed by the Velaslavasay Panorama along with wedding officiation.

BOUGAINVILLEA SPECTABILIS, also known as ''Paper Flower'' for its thin and papery bracts, is native to Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, and parts of Argentina. The bracts vary in color from white, pink, red, purple, gold, and shades in between. The color can change based on where the plant grows and it’s age.

Not just a popular decorative plant, the Bougainvillea also possess multiple health benefits. The plant is used as a method of fertility control and may have potential anticancer, antidiabetic, antihyperlipidemic, and antimicrobial properties.

It is possible that the first European to view this plant was Jeanne Baret - the first woman to circumnavigate the Earth. Disguised as a man (because women were not allowed shipboard) she joined a French Expedition led by Louis Antoine de Bougainville, after which this species was named. She used her extensive knowledge of plants to collect, describe, and analyze new species, working with botanist Philibert Commerçon.

Throughout the 19th century the plant was distributed extensively throughout French and British colonies. Today, the largest bougainvillea in the United States is in Glendora, California and is landmarked on both the California and National Historic Registers.
WISTERIA SINENSIS, commonly known as Chinese Wisteria, is native to China and was introduced to the U.S. in 1916 as an ornamental plant. The vine remains a popular choice in American gardens despite its status as invasive species in 20 states. While it can take up to 20 years for the plant to mature enough to flower, once ready, the flowers bloom beautifully annually and a single plant’s life span can last up to 100 years. The roots of the Chinese Wisteria have nitrogen fixing capabilities, thanks to the rhizobia species living there.

Though an insect pollinated plant, it is popular among hummingbirds! People and pets, however take caution with contact as all parts contain lectin and wisterin glycoside with the seeds especially toxic and hairs on the leaves causing skin irritation. The purple pendulum blossoms emit an entrancing fragrance, reminiscent of an evening in springtime.
GINKGO BILOBA also known as the “Ginkgo Tree” or “Maidenhair Tree” is a living fossil—having almost no changes for 200 million years. Native to China and used for herbal medicines, this resilient tree can withstand the pollution and smog that comes with living in a city as well as pests, disease, cold, and more.

These trees are popular in city streets, though the female ones release fleshy seeds during autumn that emit a rancid stench and the male trees are allergenic. Ginkgo nuts are edible and enjoyed in Japanese yakitori cuisine and more. An extreme example of the species’ hardiness is seen in the Ginkgo biloba trees that survived the Hiroshima atomic blast and are still standing today!

WITH HAPPY OF BOB BAKER MARIONETTE THEATER
Every year the Bob Baker Marionette Theater puts together a celebration of Bob Baker's life and legacy in the form of Bob Baker Day - a Festival involving puppets, art, creativity and historical celebration.
For our contribution to this year's festival, the Velaslavasay Panorama partned with Shenyang Visual Archive, to give a tour of Shengjing Panorama, the historic train stations La Grande Station (Los Angeles, 1893-1939) and Shenyang Station (1910 to present), along with a garden visit.

VISITATION UPDATE
Though the Velaslavasay Panorama museum exhibits and garden remain in a state of hibernation due to the Los Angeles County quarantine, we are undergoing preparations for new guest protocols and look forward to welcoming visitors in the future to experience a vision of the city of Shenyang China in the era 1910-1930 through Shengjing Panorama's immersive cityscape. Future by-appointment visit opportunities will be announced via email.
