Wild Things / Wild Scenes
A screening of animation with OneHouse Arts and Smokehouse Films
Sunday, May 21st, 2023 4:00pm
$12 / $10 VPES Members
Featuring an arrangement of stop motion animations made in 2023 by artists and apprentices of OneHouse Arts and a selection of historic 16mm animations from the archives of Smokehouse Films, Wild Things / Wild Scenes brings together contemporary explorations of experimental animation with the 100-year history of 16mm filmmaking.
In 1923, Eastman Kodak introduced the first commercially successful amateur movie camera in America, the Cine-Kodak, consisting of a camera, projector, tripod, screen and splicer, for US$335. Artists like Mary Ellen Bute began using 16mm to tell unconventional stories in wild animation, starting a tradition of creation still very much alive today.

Film-In-Residence: Animations & Shorts by Max Fleischer Studios
Saturday June 3rd, 10, 24th, 2023 3:30pm
$10 / $5 VPES Members
Inventor of the rotoscope, Polish-American animator Max Fleischer (1883 - 1972) and his production studios created iconic animations with characters like Betty Boop, Koko the Clown, Felix the Cat, Popeye, Superman and more. In 1926, Fleischer released the first cartoon with synchronized sound, My Old Kentucky Home, and his love of jazz led to cartoons (live action & animation) like Minnie the Moocher, featuring the earliest known footage of Cab Calloway in performance.
In June, Fim-In-Residence will showcase a selection of Fleischer’s rare, silent-era animations with live accompaniment from Mista Ragtime (aka John Reed-Torres), followed by a selection of short documentaries, ‘Screen Song’ cartoons and more.
