Inventor of the rotoscope, Polish-American animator Max Fleischer (1883 - 1972) and his production studios created iconic animations with characters like Betty Boop, Koko the Clown, Felix the Cat, Popeye, Superman and more. In 1926, Fleischer released the first cartoon with synchronized sound, My Old Kentucky Home, and his love of jazz led to cartoons (live action & animation) like Minnie the Moocher, featuring the earliest known footage of Cab Calloway in performance.

In June, Fim-In-Residence will showcase a selection of Fleischer’s rare, silent-era animations with live accompaniment from Mista Ragtime (aka John Reed-Torres) followed by a selection of short documentaries, ‘Screen Song’ cartoons and more.

Together with Jane Fleischer Reid, granddaughter of Max Fleischer, Mauricio Alvarado has been working to preserve and promote the cartoons of Fleischer Studios for old and new audiences. These films have been a staple in American pop culture featuring such characters as Betty Boop, Koko the Clown, Popeye the Sailorman and more. From the invention of the rotoscope to the sing along bouncing ball, the Fleischer brothers have left a lasting legacy on the world of entertainment. www.fleischercartoons.com
