The Velaslavasay Panorama presents Wheary Peepers Trunk Show — a live performance by Ursula Brookbank of light, shadow and projection on a deconstructed, modern invention for an automated moving panorama. Guests will be invited to explore the museum, gardens and grounds, watch the performance and view new paintings by artists Guan Rong and Pa,Sacio Davinci, made as part of The Future Is A Well-Traveled Track, a kinetic-autonomous initiative of the Velaslavasay Panorama.

The performance is a live adaptation of a new permanent installation, The Wheary Peepers — the premier luggage choice for stars of stageland!

A wardrobe trunk that fits under a pullman seat and carries an exhibition of travelore.

On Saturday, March 16, 2024 from 2:00 p.m - 5:00 p.m., Brookbank will perform casual demonstrations of the improvisational shadow performance, give a lecture on the use of the overhead projector, screen a short film and lead a workshop for attendees on working with overhead projectors to create illusive, transitive portrayals of humble objects. Select participants will be invited to perform their own shadow sequence on a first-come-first-served basis. Arrive early to secure your spot on the workshop list!

Ursula Brookbank

Since 2016, Ursula Brookbank has been exploring the life and work of Louise Glaum with the Velaslavasay Panorama. Using film, overhead projection, photography, video, and performance, Ursula Brookbank makes textural experiences that capture the illusive and transformative potential of humble objects and materials. These ordinary things, under conditions of light and shadow, produce another world, one that illuminates the poetry of the ordinary.

More on The Wheary Peepers

The Wheary Peepers offers spectators a peephole view into the life of a railway passenger’s drawer, traveling to the time when the Union Theatre was known as Louise Glaum’s Little Theater at Union Square (1935-1937) and the era of silent film stars like Louise Glaum, Zhou Xuan, Anna May Wong, Asta Nielsen, Nancy Columbia, and Ruan Lingyu. The Sleeper Car (2024), a 2-minute silent film invoking the shadowy work of illuminated moving pictures, plays inside the expandable trunk. Whether you are planning a round-the-world journey or a trip to Shengjing Panorama aboard the Shenyang-Pacific Limited Express, The Wheary Peepers is the ideal travel companion.
