Eskimo
US, 1933, 117 min., Digital Projection
Directed by W.S. Van Dyke
The screening of this film is sponsored by McIntyre Ranch and Peace of Selby Lodge in Alaska

Filmed in Inupiat (Alaskan Inuit language) with English intertitles. This Academy Award-winning film stars Ray Mala and was the "Biggest Picture Ever Made" at the time. Mala had his start as a cinematographer in the Far North, working with Frank Kleinschmidt and others. The story of "Eskimo" recounts the tribulations of Alaskan Inuit and non-Native traders who visit an Alaskan village and wreak havoc among the families there. Meant to deal with the effect of Western culture on remote societies, the film displays the early Hollywood symptom of trivializing the very society it attempts to elevate. In an effort to keep himself from being a typecast Inuit actor, Ray Mala took roles as Pacific Islanders and Native Americans working alongside actors such as Vincent Price, Douglas Fairbanks, and Charles Laughton. Later in life, he returned to his career in cinematography. Currently, a group of dedicated fans and cinema scholars have been working to get Mala's significant contributions recognized in the form of a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Screening will be attended by members of the Mala family. Lael Morgan's book "Eskimo Star..." will be available for purchase after the screening.

Northern Lights Over Mount Halde
Norway, 2013, 7 1/2 min., Digital Projection in 3D
Directed by Morten Skallerud
The screening of this film has been sponsored by the LA 3-D club, and 3-D Space.

"Northern Lights over Mount Halde" is based on real events, persons and places in the history of Norwegian Northern Lights research. Much of the film is shot on location at the Halde mountain, where the remains of the world's first permanent Northern Lights Observatory are still to be seen today. Most of the film is presented in 3-dimensional silhouette against the night sky. Northern Lights scenes are also filmed in 3D, using two cameras some kilometeres apart. Here we can see shapes and figures of the Aurora in a way that is impossible with the naked eye. Sponsored by: 3-D SPACE and The LA 3-D Club

“The sensation the harmonica produced after its first appearance and the unanimous applause of
all who heard it, make the instrument…the most satisfying and most beautiful mankind has
                  ever possessed.”

Lynn Drye is one of the few remaining glass concert artists in the world today.
