TEN YEARS PURSUING THE VERDANT DREAM

10 YEARS AGO ON AUGUST 6TH & 7TH, 2011
WE PRESENTED AN EXCERPT OF KWUN AND YUEJU STYLE CHINESE OPERA

On August 6-7th, 2011, Velaslavasay Panorama presented Pursuing The Verdant Dream, performances by the Chinese Kwun Opera Society and the California Yueju Opera Center. The shows included scenes from various Kwun and Yueju operas, like Story Of The Jade Hairpin and The Dream Of The Red Chamber.
 

Pursuing the Verdant Dream featured two afternoon performances of traditional Kwun and Yueju Chinese Opera, serial papercut stop-motion opera scenes, a garden pavilion with stone landscape nestled within the tortuguitas floor mosaic and a souvenir trading card set. The project was developed by Guan Rong and Sara Velas in coordination with the live performance director Professor Zhao Gan Li along with the Chinese Kwun Opera Society and the California Yueju Opera Center.

For Fun 《找乐》explores the life of Old Man, a "recently retired concierge of an opera company and his battle against bureaucracy to establish an amateur opera troupe featuring men like himself." Directed by international filmmaker Ning Ying, who studied with Bernardo Bertolucci and at both the Beijing Film Academy and the Rome Film Experimental Academy, her film is about the relationship between the individual and the community in a city that is crumbling and being rebuilt at the same time.

For Fun 《找乐》is the final iteration of the Velaslavasay Panorama's 20th Anniversary film screening series Electric Shadows On Penglai Mountain presented in collaboration with The Livonian Cinema.
