COLD WORM (time, auto-corrected)
Sunday, April 17th, 2016
Doors 6:30 P.M. / Lecture 7 P.M.
RSVP Only: rsvp@wendemuseum.org

An illuminated lecture performed by Yelena Zhelezov and Kate Dollenmayer, COLD WORM (time, auto-corrected) is a presentation of slides and films from the Cold War archives of the Wende Museum, projected in their original formats. This illuminated lecture is inspired by the position of the Dutch cultural scientist Johan Huizinga, who “described the work of the historian as a performance, since the researcher is forced to make conceptions of social life, events and entities of the past by himself.  A historical book is thereby a script of a performance of the historian and his conception of history.” (Time, Non-representational Theory and the "Performative Turn" by Peter Dirksmeier & Ilse Helbrecht)

Yelena Zhelezov (artist as historian) is based in Los Angeles and Polotsk (Belarus). She often cites and samples film as an ephemeral record of social and aestethic history in her practice.

Kate Dollenmayer (archivist as performer) is the Audiovisual Archivist at the Wende Museum in Culver City, which collects and preserves art, artifacts, archives, films, and personal histories from Cold War–era Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union relating to the period 1945–1991.

Interested parties should RSVP by sending an email with the subject line "COLD WORM" to rsvp@wendemuseum.org. This free program is supported in part by a grant from the Department of Cultural Affairs for the City of Los Angeles.

Viewers will swim under the sea past fishes and mermaids, sail boats across turquoise waters, land on 13 distinct islands, step inside sea shanties on stilts, dance between lovers and emerge drenched in Moken mythology. The film is scored by Bitchin' Bajas (Drag City) and Directed by Olivia Wyatt, an award-winning filmmaker and photographer. Wyatt directed, produced, shot and edited three feature-length documentaries, Staring into the Sun (2011), The Pierced Heart & The Machete (2013), and Sailing A Sinking Sea (2015).
